Remodeler Aging in Place Bathroom Pages That Measure Instead of Patronize
These pages are usually written like greeting cards. Comfort, dignity, peace of mind, and not one number anywhere.
The families hiring for this work have done research. They are comparing remodelers on whether the grab bar has blocking behind it. Write for them.
Blocking is the whole grab bar conversation
A grab bar is only as good as what it is screwed into. Studs rarely land where bars need to go, so a remodel that opens walls should add wood blocking across the toilet, tub, and shower zones, wide enough that bar placement can be decided later and still hit solid wood.
Say that, and photograph it before the tile goes up. It is the one photo that separates a remodeler who plans for aging from one who sells bars as an accessory at the end. Bars themselves should be rated, textured enough to grip with wet hands, and sized to the hand, not the catalog photo.
Curbless means structural, say so
Removing the shower curb means the pan has to sit lower, which means recessing into the floor structure or building the rest of the room up, plus a slope that keeps water at the drain and a drain with capacity for a handheld running wide open. On a slab it is one job. Over joists it is another, and the page should not quote them the same.
Linear drains, large format tile limits on a sloped floor, and where the dry zone actually starts are the specifics owners are Googling at midnight. Answer those and skip the spa language entirely.
Heights, levers, and light
Comfort height toilets, roughly chair height, lever or touchless faucets that arthritic hands can run, rocker switches, and lighting that is bright without throwing glare off wet tile. Each is a small line item. Together they are the difference between a bathroom that photographs well and one that gets used safely at 6 AM.
Door width belongs in this section, not in an afterthought: a clear opening around 32 inches, with a lever handle, and a plan for the door swing that does not trap anyone who falls against it. Outward swing or pocket doors earn their mention here.
Plan for the aide, not just the owner
The room may need to fit two people, one of them helping. Turning space, a shower bench with room beside it, handheld shower on a slide bar that reaches a seated user, and clear floor in front of the toilet for a walker or a helper. Pages almost never mention the second person. The families reading them are thinking about nothing else.
End on sequence: do the structural and blocking work in this remodel even if some fixtures come later. Opening the same wall twice is the expensive version of aging in place, and it is avoidable with one honest paragraph now.

Frequently asked questions
Do grab bars need special installation?
Yes. Bars must anchor into studs or added wood blocking inside the wall to carry real load safely. Bars screwed only into tile and drywall can pull out under a fall. If walls are open during a remodel, blocking should be added across toilet, tub, and shower zones.
Is a curbless shower possible in any bathroom?
Usually, but the method depends on structure. The shower floor must sit low enough for slope to the drain, which can mean recessing joists or raising the surrounding floor. Slab and wood framed floors price differently, and drainage capacity has to match the shower fittings.
What toilet height is best for aging in place?
Comfort or chair height models, with a seat around 17 to 19 inches, are easier to sit on and stand from for most adults. The right choice also depends on the user height and whether a wheelchair transfer is planned, which changes side clearance too.
When should we remodel for aging in place?
Before it is urgent. A planned remodel lets you add blocking, widen a door, and fix floor structure on a normal schedule. The same work after a fall or a hospital discharge happens at emergency pace and emergency prices.
